Cheques for property tax worth Rs 11 cr bounce in seven GHMC circles

There have been 39 bounced checks totaling Rs 11 crore that were paid for property taxes across seven Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation circles. The municipal body filed formal complaints (FIRs) at many police stations inside the GHMC boundaries on Tuesday, taking severe action against the taxpayers for their check bounce.

With thirteen bounce incidents, Chandanagar GHMC Circle was first on the list. Jubilee Hills (5), Serilingampally (4), Yousufguda (8), Quthbullapur (4), Moosapet (4), and Kukatpally (1) were next. For the fiscal year 2023–2024, the GHMC collected property tax of Rs 1,921 crore; however, Rs 11 crore of that amount was due to cheque bounces.

Ronald Rose, GHMC Commissioner, warned taxpayers that failure to pay the check bounce amount right now might result in GHMC filing formal complaints in the coming days. According to him, people should make sure that checks don’t bounce in the future.

Additionally, he counseled the populace to pay off their debts and take advantage of the Early Bird Scheme, which offers a 5% discount on current year property taxes and expires on April 30, 2024.
