Dr. Samir Shah becomes the BBC’s first chairman of Indian descent

Dr. Samir Shah, a media professional of Indian descent, was officially named the next head of the BBC on Thursday after his nomination passed all necessary inspections and was authorized by King Charles III this week

.

After being selected as the government’s top choice in December of last year, Shah—who has over 40 years of experience in UK broadcasting—was questioned by MPs from various parties on the House of Commons Media, Culture, and Sport Select Committee over his pre-appointment examination.

As the first person of Indian descent to lead the national broadcaster, the 72-year-old has now been officially confirmed for the 160,000 pounds per year, four-year position, which will begin on March 4 and end on March 20,28.

“Dr. Shah has a wealth of experience to bring to the position of BBC Chair, having worked for over 40 years in TV production and journalism,” UK Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer stated upon announcing his appointment.

She said, “I have no doubt he will provide the support and scrutiny that the BBC needs to meet the challenges and opportunities of the future. He has a clear ambition to see the BBC succeed in a rapidly changing media landscape.”
