FinMin reports that 14,277 GST appeals are pending against disputed central authority tax demands

As of June 2023, there might be 14,227 appeals outstanding against contested tax requests made by the Central GST authority, the Parliament was told on Monday.

The establishment of GST Appellate Tribunals around the nation was agreed during the 49th meeting of the GST Council, according to Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary.

In a written response to a question in the Lok Sabha, the Minister said, “It has been planned to establish the State benches in a phased manner based on the request of states.”

The number of GST appeals against requests made by the Central GST authorities that are still pending at different levels was also disclosed by him. 14,227 appeals were pending in 2023–2024 (as of June 2023). The amount increased from 11,899 appeals that were still unresolved as of March 2023.

The establishment of GST Appellate Tribunal benches in the states will aid in hastening the settlement of disputes.

At the moment, taxpayers who disagree with a tax authority’s decision must file a case with the appropriate High Court. Due to the High Courts’ existing case backlog and lack of a specialized bench to handle GST issues, the settlement procedure takes longer.
