In terms of health insurance, is age simply a number? New rules from IRDAI provide opportunities for senior citizens

Unending health coverage: If you’re over 65, you may be concerned about getting health insurance. You may now exhale with relief! The maximum age restriction for obtaining health insurance plans has been removed, per a recent regulation modification by the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI). Previously limited to giving coverage to policyholders only until the age of 65, insurers are now willing to provide health insurance to everyone above 65 without regard to age limitations.

There have been significant modifications to the health insurance rules that are beneficial to policyholders. These changes are going to take effect right now and will be included into all new policies as well as current ones when they are renewed.

Increased security for policyholders
The shortening of waiting times for pre-existing conditions is another significant change. In the past, waiting times might have lasted up to eight years, especially for pre-existing conditions. Policyholders may now rest easy knowing that this period has been drastically reduced to 5 years. Insurance companies are not allowed to deny claims on the grounds of non-disclosure or misrepresentation after 60 months of continuous coverage, unless there is clear evidence of fraud.

“No policy or claim may be contested by the insurer on the basis of non-disclosure or misrepresentation after sixty consecutive months of coverage (including portability and migration), unless there is proof of proven fraud. The IRDAI rules defined this as a “moratorium period,” which is sixty consecutive months.

Wait time for pre-existing diseases reduced
In addition, the waiting time for pre-existing conditions for both new and current policyholders has been shortened from four years to a maximum of three years. This implies that instead of having to pay four premiums, as was previously the case, those with illnesses like diabetes or hypertension may now get coverage for associated hospitalization claims after paying only three.

One significant step in improving the nation’s health insurance plans’ efficacy and accessibility is the removal of maximum age limitations and the shortening of waiting periods. With these modifications, policyholders should feel more secure financially and have peace of mind knowing that their medical requirements will be sufficiently met.
