Increased onion buffer from 3 lakh MT to 5 lakh MT

After meeting the original purchase objective of 3 lakh metric tonne, the government increased the quantity of onion buffer this year in an unprecedented step to 5 lakh metric tonne.

The Department of Consumer Affairs has instructed NCCF and NAFED to each purchase 1 lakh tonnes in order to meet this increased procurement objective and dispose of the purchased inventories in key consumption centers in a controlled manner.

Onions from the buffer are now being disposed of, with a focus on important markets in States and UTs whose retail prices are higher than the average for all of India and/or much higher than the previous month.

About 1,400 MT of onions from the buffer have already been sent to the designated markets and are continuing to be released to increase availability as of this writing.

Along with being released in large markets, onions from the buffer are starting tomorrow to be made accessible to retail customers at a discounted price of Rs 25 per kilogram via retail locations and mobile NCCF vans. In the next days, other agencies and e-commerce platforms will be added in order to improve the retail sale of onions.

By guaranteeing onion growers fair prices while maintaining their constant supply to customers at reasonable costs, the government’s multifaceted efforts are anticipated to benefit both farmers and consumers.
