“Shocked”: Bank Reacts to Senior Cop’s Allegation That HDFC Denies Police Loans

According to a Jammu and Kashmiri policeman, he learned that HDFC Bank did not lend money to law enforcement personnel when he applied for a personal loan. Imtiyaz Hussain expressed his dismay on social media over the purported policy against “the men in khaki.”

“Applied at HDFC Bank for a personal loan. I was astounded to learn that it is their policy not to lend money to police officers. Knowing this is very offensive and painful. Hussain posted on X, tagging the home minister’s office and the Jammu and Kashmir Police, saying, “Every citizen should find it unacceptable that the men in khaki who work day and night in service of our great nation are treated like this.”

In response to the post, HDFC Bank said, “Hey Imtiyaz, let us explain that there isn’t really such a policy. Numerous law enforcement officers throughout are among our prestigious clientele, having obtained loans from us. We apologize for your experience and will contact you to discuss the problem.

However, after reading Hussain’s article, a number of irate bank customers complained that, despite having a salary account with the relevant institutions and a consistent income, their loans had also been denied because of their occupations.

Journalists as well as attorneys. Twenty years ago, despite the fact that my firm had an account there and I had a salary account there, I was turned down for a vehicle loan! wrote Mohan Sinha (@Mohansinha), an X user. “After they took my signed checks, made me wait two weeks, and called the bank, I overheard them yelling that they don’t lend money to journalists.”

Once upon a time, they had the similar policy for journalists, said Promita Mukherjee (@promzzz), another X user.

While salaried workers are not given loans by private banks, troubled businesspeople Nirav Modi, Mehul Chowksi, and Vijay Mallya were given large loans and were “allowed to abscond with no repercussions,” according to a third user, Bandit (@BanditOnYour6).
