The Cabinet of the 16th Finance Commission has approved the creation of three joint secretary positions

16th Finance Commission: Three joint secretary positions have been authorized by the Union Cabinet, which is led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. An official announcement on Thursday said that the 16th Finance Commission has two positions as joint secretaries and one position as an economic adviser.

In accordance with Article 280 of the Constitution, the 16th Finance Commission was established by notification on December 31, 2023.

It is necessary for the recently established positions to support the Commission in performing its duties. According to the statement, all other positions within the Commission have already been established in accordance with the granted authority.

Arvind Panagariya has been named by the federal government to lead the 16th Finance Commission. The Commission will provide its findings by October 31, 2025, covering a five-year period between 2026 and 2031.

Arvind Panagariya, a professor at Columbia University, held the position of Vice-Chairman for Niti Aayog from January 2015 to August 2017.

Ritvik Ranjanam Pandey has been named the Commission’s secretary.
