To challenge Apple, Facebook parent company Meta will collaborate with Microsoft, Asus, and Lenovo on a VR operating system

Facebook’s parent company Meta has stated that, as part of its aspirations to challenge Apple in the burgeoning virtual and mixed reality space, it would make Horizon OS—the software that drives its Meta Quest devices—available to other hardware manufacturers, including Microsoft, Asus, and Lenovo.
Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of the company, announced the news in a video that he posted on Instagram.

“A few metaverse updates. In the article, he said, “Today we’re opening up Meta Horizon OS, our operating system that powers Quest, so others can design more headsets in our ecosystem.”
“Some of our initial partners are Lenovo, Microsoft, and ASUS, and more are on the way.” We are anticipating a new generation of headsets for gaming, entertainment, productivity, fitness, and other uses! Zuckerberg continued.

With this change, the tech firms will be able to develop headsets that use Meta Horizon OS, an operating system that provides features to its devices such as passthrough, gesture detection, spatial anchoring, and scene interpretation.
Meta wants to collaborate with Google
Meta’s mixed reality (MR) and virtual reality (VR) devices run on Horizon OS, an operating system derived from Google’s Android platform. Additionally, it has been reported that Google is developing an Android platform for VR and MR devices. Additionally, Mark Zuckerberg said that Google Play applications on Meta Horizon OS devices would be welcomed “if they’re up for it.”
Renamed from Quest Store, Horizon Store allows users to download programs and experiences as part of the Meta Horizon OS, according to Meta. The Meta Horizon app is the new mobile companion app that the platform will function with.
Zuckerberg is mocking Apple.
Zuckerberg even criticized the Apple Vision Pro headgear, and Meta has been protesting Apple’s App Store limitations for years.
“Open and closed models have always existed in computing.” Apple’s closed approach essentially prevailed in the phone market. You are restricted in what you can do with your phone and it is strictly regulated. However, this isn’t the only option,” Zuckerberg said.
With the help of the metaverse, glasses, and headsets, Zuckerberg said, “Our objective is to make it known that the open model defines the next generation of computing again.”
