Rick Roy: Discovered after four days that we are not on par on set

Transgender actress Trinetra Haldar had a key part in the second season of Made in Heaven last year, which made a compelling argument for diversity on screen. Amazon Prime Video has hired LGBT designer Rick Roy in the forthcoming young adult series Dil Dosti Dilemma, in keeping with its worldwide objective of diversity.

When Roy was first brought on as a stylist for the Anushka Sen and Tanvi Azmi film, he recalls attending the pre-production meeting to talk about the show’s color scheme. “I had worn my finest attire to the meeting. The joke that I ought to be chosen for the show’s huge, [eccentric] designer part began. We all chuckled about how everyone thought I would be great for the role, he remembers. He pretended it was a joke, but shortly after, the executive producer of the show called.

They wanted to cast me, she said. It wasn’t until they contacted my boss to go over the specifics that it became true to me. Debbie Rao, the director, gave me the courage to take the risk. Working with wonderful individuals is one of the main reasons this program is dear to my heart among many others. As a stylist, I can see that the program defies preconceptions and has been accepting of all body types.

Having worked as a costume designer for Desi Boyz (2011), Tumhari Sulu (2017), and Shiddat (2021), Roy has been in the business for twenty years. He obtained a character that was an extension of himself for his first acting assignment. “The part has all that I am. I had sequences on six pages,” he remarks. He learned a couple other things during the acting hiatus. “I came to realize that acting takes a lot of patience. The benefits, however, include a nice vanity vehicle and a good salary. You receive significantly better attention as an actor than the technicians do. I discovered throughout the four-day acting engagement that we are not on an equal footing on set.

Will he take acting seriously and turn it into a second job, the way Masaba Gupta, the designer, did? “Bebo [Kareena Kapoor Khan] will be my only source of inspiration if I ever want to pursue acting.” She is a celebrity, a lot of fun, and yet kind. She is honest, and I like that in a person.
