The actor reportedly informed Congress MLA Amit Deshmukh, who is his brother, that “time has come for him to take a decision,” according to The Indian Express. Amit Deshmukh denied having any intentions to leave the Congress in response to rumors that he could join the BJP, the article said.

“The moment has arrived for you to make a choice. Riteish Deshmukh informed his brother as he wrapped up his speech, “Latur has many expectations from you, but Maharashtra too has many expectations,” as reported by The Indian Express.

Given that Ashok Chavan, Baba Siddique, and Milind Deora, three prominent Congressmen, have lately left the party, the rumors surrounding Amit Deshmukh take on more importance. Ashok Chavan joined the BJP, Baba Siddique joined the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Milind Deora joined Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena. Baba Siddique also joined the Ajit Pawar group of the NCP.

Zeeshan, the current MLA from Bandra East and the son of Baba Siddique, is expected to succeed his father.

Present at the event were senior Congress politician Balasaheb Thorat, former chief minister Prithviraj Chavan, and president of the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee Nana Patole, among other dignitaries.

Born in Latur on May 26, 1945, Vilasrao Deshmukh held cabinet posts in the UPA administration led by Manmohan Singh and twice served as the chief minister of Maharashtra. August 14, 2012, was his death date.
