What About Ajay Devgn’s Maidaan Didn’t Work?

This year’s major Eid release was Ajay Devgn’s much anticipated Maidaan, a biographical sports drama based on the life of Syed Abdul Rahim, an innovative football coach in India who was active from 1952 to 1962. At the box office, it competed with Ali Abbas Zafar’s action film Bade Miyan Chote Miyan.

Even though Maidaan won several accolades from critics, it hasn’t been able to top Tiger Shroff and Akshay Kumar’s box office success to yet. It seems that despite receiving positive reviews, Maidaan has not been able to connect with the general public, raising questions about what went wrong.

Director of casting Kunal M. Shah believes that Maidaan’s release schedule may have been the main factor in the film’s failure to take off in theaters. Shah explains, “It’s the weekend of Eid, and people kind of go to movie theaters to celebrate the big festival.” “Unfortunately, Maidaan is not a masala movie, a commercial potboiler, or an out-and-out entertainer as we sa,” he continues.

Shah adds that Bade Miyan Chote Miyan is everything Maidaan is not, in not too many words.

He says, “The title Bade Miyan Chote Miyan itself, which truly works for tiny communities and single screen theaters, made the competition even more intense. He adds, “Akshay Kumar and Tiger Shroff’s large cast also has a huge draw at the box office.”

Several attempts failed to bring Ajay Devgn’s Maidaan to life.
However, business guru and film producer Girish Johar believes that Maidaan’s failure was not limited to its release schedule, but rather stemmed from a number of factors. “The film’s editing was not done well by the director. He clarifies, “It was a very long, dry picture with a biographical feel to it.

The only consolation was the sporting activity and match editing. The movie’s soundtrack was another thing that did not burn. AR Rahman’s film fell short of expectations. Ajay Devgn’s involvement notwithstanding, I think the other characters were not well explored. There ought to have been a component of relief as well. A small relief element is also necessary for the kind of film it is. A few humorous moments were required to keep the audience interested. The audience did not connect with it much, despite receiving positive ratings from critics, he claims.
It was a poor marketing tactic.

However, a business expert and film exhibitor emphasizes that Maidaan’s box office performance was hindered by an ineffective advertising plan.

Rathi emphasizes, “While enough awareness was created about it, there was not enough communication around what it really stands for,” stating that the advertising effort that was constructed around Maidaan was what really underperformed.

Rathi claims that even though the movie is “such a wonderful film featuring one of our biggest superstars Ajay Devgn and being backed with great production value,” not enough “FOMO” could be generated for it to obtain an opening.
What made Ajay Devgn’s Maidaan unsuccessful?

But in my opinion, quality material never fades, and it’s great to see that Maidaan is really maintaining itself by becoming a bit better every day. These are positive indications, and because there aren’t any major releases coming up, we may conclude that Maidaan has a chance to be a lambi race ka ghoda and remain in theaters for a little longer,” he adds.

Additionally, Shah says, “Maidaan is a brilliant and outstanding film; it was probably released during the wrong period of time, which in turn is the major reason for the film to not have the numbers it ideally should have had.”

The box office success of Maidaan and its future prospects
The youthful actor Amartya Ray, who portrays Chuni Goswami in Maidaan, also discusses his theories on what may have prevented the movie from becoming a box office hit. He continues, “The film has a huge distributor, someone as experienced and celebrated as Boney Kapoor produced the film and I am sure they have their own machinery, design, and belief of how the film has to be promoted. It is beyond my jurisdiction as a young actor in the team to speak on such matters.”

Amartya does, however, allude to Maidaan’s potential box office rivalry with this week’s other major movie. We also have another movie that came out with us, and they have been promoting it nonstop, but we all know what is going on with the movie and its box office performance. There is a lot of nonsense that is shared, he thinks.

While Maidaan’s marketing approach may have been lacking in many respects, Amartya believes that the movie itself has been the mainstay.

I think it’s going to become a cult over time. In terms of box office receipts, I think the movie will do well as well. I’ve been informed that the movie is playing to packed houses in Delhi, Mumbai, and Kolkata. The movie is really becoming popular. This movie might become a historical classic,” he concludes.
