When “Sunflowers were the First Ones to Know” is chosen for the Cannes Film Festival-Exclusive, Madhavan experiences mixed emotions of pride and anxiety

A student at the esteemed Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Chidanand Naik has accomplished a noteworthy achievement: his short film “Sunflowers were the First Ones to Know” has been selected to screen in the La Cinef section of the 77th Cannes Film Festival.

The head of FTII, R Madhavan, expressed great delight in his student’s performance in an exclusive interview with ETimes.R Madhavan expressed his feelings: “I’m feeling both anxious and really pleased. I hope they win the much-desired award. I am really pleased of the faculty and pupils. This is a huge one, hopefully.”

The Cannes Film Festival’s La Cinef segment is slated to run from May 15 to May 24, 2024. Its goal is to recognize and support films from different film schools throughout the globe. ‘Sunflowers were the First Ones to Know’ was chosen as one of the eighteen shorts that were chosen from 2,263 entries from film schools throughout the world. There were four animated and fourteen live-action shorts.

Being the only Indian film at the prestigious La Cinef area of Cannes, this one sticks out. On May 23, the Buñuel Theatre will host a ceremony before the chosen films are shown, during which the Jury will deliver the La Cinef prizes.
