How stress increases the likelihood of a number of illnesses

The month of April is recognized as Stress Awareness Month. People of all ages are under unprecedented strain and stress in today’s fast-paced society, which is causing a rise in issues related to mental and physical health.

“Stress can have profound effects on the body, contributing to various health conditions and diseases, in addition to impacting mental well-being,” said Vipul Gupta, co-chief of the stroke unit at Artemis Hospital in Gurugram and director of neurointervention, in an interview with IANS.

Stress, according to the doctor, may interfere with sleep cycles, making it harder to get asleep or remain asleep, which raises the risk of cardiovascular conditions including hypertension, heart disease, and stroke.

Prolonged stress sets off a series of physiological reactions that may interfere with regular body processes. These reactions include high levels of stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline.

Stress is also associated with digestive problems such as gastritis and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) because it may worsen inflammation and disturb gut motility. In addition, the doctor noted that chronic stress may exacerbate hormonal abnormalities that impair both men’s and women’s ability to reproduce.

According to a December 2023 ICICI Lombard General Insurance report, one in three Indians is experiencing stress. According to the research, 77% of Indians routinely suffer at least one sign of stress.

Stress management is greatly aided by coping strategies including mindfulness exercises, a balanced diet, regular exercise, keeping up social relationships, etc.

To relieve stress, counseling psychologist Divya Mohindroo recommended learning about deep breathing, mindfulness, and meditation.

She also emphasized the healing benefits of writing and using nature’s force.

Examine the advantages of outdoor activities for managing stress. This demonstrates a stress-reduction strategy that is in line with the idea of mindfulness, the spokesperson told IANS.

The experts emphasized the significance of asking for assistance when necessary.

“It’s critical to recognize when stress gets too much and to get expert assistance. When symptoms worsen, become more disruptive to everyday life, or result in physical illnesses, a visit to a physician or mental health expert is required. Stress awareness month is a good opportunity to remember to put your mental health first and get help when you need it, according to Vipul.
