According to Japan’s PM Kishida, Russia’s aggression against Ukraine is upending the G20’s foundation and having a significant impact on the global economy

On Sunday, Fumio Kishida, the prime minister of Japan, said that the Russian invasion of Ukraine had shook the G20’s commitment to collaboration and had had a significant impact on the global economy.

The remark was made a day after the G20 approved a united statement called the G20 New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration, which was agreed despite stark disagreements over the Ukraine War and a softening of the terminology connected to it.

On February 24, Russia invaded Ukraine, ushering in the greatest war to hit Europe since World War II. Due to dependence on Russia and Ukraine, the two major exporters of grain and fertilizers, the conflict has affected the global economy and contributed to food shortages in certain regions of the globe.

Speaking to the media on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Delhi, Kishida said that the war’s influence on food and energy prices has had a “enormous impact” on the global economy. Additionally, he said that the G20 is becoming more significant.

According to Kishdida, cooperation at the G 20 as the main venue for international economic cooperation is becoming more crucial as the globe deals with a compound crisis. The G 20’s basis of collaboration is being shaken by Russia’s aggressiveness in Ukraine. It has the potential to undermine the G 20’s foundation for cooperation and is already having a significant negative effect on the global economy due to things like the persistent increase in food and energy costs. At the G20 Summit this year, the majority of G20 members—including Japan—emphasized the significance of respecting the UN Charter from such views.

Kishida said that even the prospect of using nuclear weapons in the current conflict is unacceptable and that Japan has pushed for the rapid departure of Russian forces from Ukraine.

Russia has threatened to deploy nuclear weapons during the Ukraine War. It has been suggested that Russia may at some time deploy at least short-range tactical nuclear weapons. As a result of Russia stationing nuclear weapons in its neighbor and ally Belarus, tensions have increased further.

“We reaffirmed our stance that the nuclear threat from Russia, let alone the deployment of nuclear weapons, is wholly unacceptable. In a video posted by ANI, Kishida stated, “I also emphasized the significance of help from the world community to vulnerable communities under violence.

The unanimous adoption of the G20 New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration was hailed by Kishida as a “truly meaningful achievement.” As there were significant differences between China and Russia and the Western nations on the Ukraine War, there were initially concerns that such a deceleration may not occur.

We were able to agree on the G20 Leaders’ statement under India’s leadership as this year’s chair, which is a genuinely remarkable accomplishment. Japan has been actively involved in the talks with the goal of conveying the G7’s decision to the G20, and we were able to deliver the points that were agreed upon at the Hiroshima Summit to the G20. As reported by ANI, “I look forward to working with other leaders to follow up on the outcomes delivered by the G7 and G20.”
