After a “brazen assault” on Israel, the US and the UK impose sanctions on Iran

In reaction to Iran’s retaliatory missile and drone strike on Israel last Sunday, the US and Britain announced sanctions and additional export control restrictions on Iranian military leaders on Thursday.

US President Joe Biden stated in a statement that “the sanctions target leaders and entities connected to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Iran’s Defense Ministry, and the Iranian government’s missile and drone program that enabled this brazen assault.” Additionally, he hinted that the US and the UK will urge the other members of the G7 to put more economic pressure on Tehran.

The Iranian Defense Minister and other military personnel and groups, such as the Armed Forces General Staff and the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) Navy, would be subject to asset freezes and travel restrictions as part of the sanctions. Iran’s UAV manufacture was facilitated by 16 people and two businesses, including the engines that propelled Iran’s Shahed type UAVs, which were used in the April 13 assault, according to a statement from the US Treasury Department.

Three subsidiaries of Iranian carmaker Bahman Group and five businesses that provide Khuzestan Steel Company (KSC) in Iran with component materials for steel manufacture were also identified.

Thirteen individuals have been sanctioned, mostly prominent figures in Iran’s drone and missile sectors, according to UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. According to Tehran, the incident on April 13 was carried out in retribution for an Israeli strike that destroyed its consulate in Damascus and killed at least 13 people, six of whom were local Syrians.
