Bangladesh Fire: Fire-Related Industrial Accidents Claiming Over 1,500 Lives in Ten Years

At least 44 people lost their lives and 22 suffered serious injuries in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, when a huge fire that started in a biryani restaurant spread over a six-story structure.

Similar fires and other mishaps in structures catering to the expanding domestic industrial and commercial sectors have claimed hundreds of lives, often due to a lack of proper safety precautions.

June 2022: A fire that broke out at a depot close to the southern port city of Chittagong left more than 40 people dead and 200 wounded. According to fire authorities, the fire may have been started by a hydrogen peroxide bottle since safety precautions were not taken.

At least 52 people lost their lives in a fire in July 2021 at a food processing plant outside of Dhaka, which authorities said was constructed without permits and without proper safety precautions.

at February 2019, a fire at an ancient Dhaka building that included residences on the top three stories and businesses and a plastics warehouse on the lowest two levels claimed the lives of at least 70 people. The fire was caused by illegally stored combustible chemicals, according to authorities.

September 2016: Authorities reported that a gas line leak and a boiler explosion were likely the cause of the fire that claimed the lives of at least 33 persons at a food and cigarette packaging company in Dhaka.

In August 2016, a fertilizer business in Chittagong released gas into the air, which caused more than a hundred people to get sick.

April 2013: The worst industrial tragedy in the nation resulted in the collapse of an eight-story building outside Dhaka that housed five garment manufacturers, resulting in at least 1,136 deaths and hundreds more injuries.

November 2012: Over 150 people were wounded and 112 workers lost their lives in a fire at a Dhaka clothing factory that supplied international brands. According to officials, a short circuit was the origin of the fire.
