China Restricts US Exports of AI Chips and Tools

Washington, DC: In an attempt to stifle Beijing’s chip sector due to national security concerns, the Biden administration updated regulations on Friday that make it more difficult for China to get American artificial intelligence (AI) chips and chipmaking equipment.

Out in October, the regulations aim to stop the supply of more sophisticated AI processors to China, including those made by Nvidia (NVDA.O) and other companies, as Washington clamps down on Beijing due to worries that China’s military might be strengthened by the country’s burgeoning tech industry.

On Thursday, the 166-page new regulations will take effect. For instance, they make it clear that laptops that include certain processors are likewise subject to the prohibitions on semiconductor sales to China.

In an effort to strengthen and improve the regulations, the Commerce Department, which is in charge of export controls, has said that it intends to keep revising the limitations on technology exports to China.
