Death at a US hospital: 57-year-old Indian national in deportation proceedings

Washington: Jaspal Singh, 57, an Indian national, passed away in an Atlanta hospital while he was being held under arrest. Singh was awaiting deportation, according to federal officials, who claimed that he had entered the country unlawfully.

The Indian Consulate in New York and Singh’s next of kin have been notified of his death, according to US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

The suspected unauthorized entrance of Jaspal Singh into the US
Although Jaspal Singh had first entered the US lawfully in 1992, an immigration court issued an order for his removal from the nation in 1998. At a later time, he willingly went back to India.

However, when trying to enter the country illegally at the US-Mexico border, Singh was detained on June 29, 2023, by US Customs and Border Protection personnel. The Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) in Atlanta was tasked with holding him after that.

What the officials stated
Singh’s immigration processes proceeded while he was being held at a federal detention center in Atlanta. An autopsy is still pending, therefore, the official reason of his death is still unknown.

According to ICE, “it is mandatory for the ERO to notify Congress, non-governmental organization stakeholders, and the media when a non-citizen dies at a detention center.” According to PTI, they also said that a formal statement with pertinent information would be made available on their public website in two business days.
