Following the collapse of a NYC apartment building’s corner, firefighters look for those who are trapped

Witnesses, broadcast footage, and police all reported that on Monday afternoon, a six-story corner of an apartment building in the Bronx fell, exposing units like a stack of shelves. By early evening, there were no reports of casualties, but the firemen kept searching.

According to the Fire Department, they were alerted at 3:40 p.m. about a building’s corner collapsing in the vicinity of the University Heights area.

Just before five o’clock in the evening, Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh said on X, the previous Twitter platform, “We have no report of injuries at this time but our members, including our K-9 team, are looking for any people trapped.”

The video showed a pile of debris on the street and a corner of the six-story structure with its walls ripped off and floors sinking. Metal that seemed to have been from scaffolding that had been erected around a portion of the structure was among the broken and twisted wreckage.

In one room, the wall had a photograph; in another, the exposed floor edge was only feet away from what looked like a bed.

A video from WABC-TV shows firemen using tall ladders to shine bright lights into apartment windows. Additionally, at least one drone was seen hovering a few feet from the spot where the wall had collapsed into the road.

Officials from the Buildings Department said that investigators were on the site.

The owner of the building may have answered the phone while it rang unanswered.
