German Chancellor: “It would be a good thing if British courts gave Assange the necessary protection.”

According to the Anadolu Agency, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed opposition to Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, being extradited to the United States on Monday.

The outlet cited Scholz as saying on Monday, “I think it would be a good thing if the British courts gave him the necessary protection.”

“Because he has to expect prosecution in the US, considering that he has compromised state secrets of the United States,” he said.

In the southwest city of Sindelfingen, Scholz spoke to kids at the Gottlieb-Daimler School during a question-and-answer period.

Following the hearing held before the UK High Court in London last month, the chancellor of the Social Democrats expressed optimism that Assange’s prospects of avoiding extradition had improved.

Assange is accused of 17 counts of espionage and one count of computer abuse, according to US attorneys, and if found guilty, could spend up to 175 years in jail. However, officials have said that the actual term will probably be much less. This information is reported by DW News.

Australian Assange’s supporters claim he is a journalist who exposed crimes by the US military in Afghanistan and Iraq. They contend that he has little prospect of receiving a fair trial in the US and that the prosecution is acting politically.
