In a possible hate crime, a Sikh musician was shot and killed outside a gurdwara in the US state of Alabama

A 29-year-old Sikh musician who belonged to a Sikh kirtan ensemble was reportedly shot and killed on Saturday outside a gurdwara in Selma, Alabama, in what is being investigated as a possible hate crime.

Raj Singh, popularly known as Goldy, lived in the Uttar Pradesh hamlet of Tanda Sahuwala in the Bijnor district. He was a “ragi” who spent more than a year touring the US with his musical ensemble.

While Goldy was standing outside the gurdwara, he was shot by guys who were not recognized. On Sunday, his family was informed about the incident.

“Relatives notified us about the occurrence. Five days have passed, and his post-mortem has not yet been completed. The gurdwara committee is assisting us with our request for more information. According to the Times of India, the deceased’s brother-in-law, Gurdeep Singh, said, “We have also appealed to our government for justice and the arrest of the killers.”

Raj Singh’s murder seems not to have had a racist motive, Selma police confirmed to GVWire, a local news source that quoted sergeant Caleb Garcia.
