In an army helicopter disaster, nine Colombian troops perished

Nine soldiers were killed when an army helicopter bringing supplies to the troops crashed in a remote region of northern Colombia on Monday, according to the armed forces of the nation.

The National Liberation Army guerrilla group and the Gulf Clan drug trafficking organization have lately engaged in combat in the municipality of Santa Rosa del Sur, according to a statement released by the Colombian military. This is where the supplies were being transported by helicopter.

The helicopter crash was characterized as an accident in the military statement.

Gustavo Petro, the president of Colombia, posted on X on Monday, saying, “I regret the death of the nine passengers on board the army’s helicopter.”

“It was providing forces to… those carrying out operations against the Gulf Clan.”

The chopper went down at 1:50 p.m. local time, according to the military. It was a Russian-built MI-17 helicopter, often used for transporting soldiers and supplies.

Along with two sergeants and three privates, the collision claimed the lives of two officers. On the helicopter, not a single person made it out alive.
