JLR automobiles may be released by Tata Motors from its Tamil Nadu plant

According to reports, Tata Motors intends to produce premium Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) vehicles in Tamil Nadu. Although the corporation has not responded to inquiries, it is anticipated that the domestic manufacturer will begin producing JLR automobiles using battery power from the new factory.

In March, Tata Motors announced plans to spend Rs 9,000 crore to establish a car manufacturing facility in Tamil Nadu’s Ranipet area. The carmaker has not said whether it would produce commercial or passenger cars here.

This is seen as a step in the Tata Group’s plan to transform JLR into an electric vehicle brand. JLR said last year that it will spend 15 billion pounds ($19 billion) on electric vehicles (EVs) over the next five years. JLR was purchased by Tata Motors in 2009.

The new allegations surface at a time when international automakers are lining up to begin electric vehicle (EV) production in India. VinFast Auto, an EV manufacturer located in Vietnam, has started building on a new integrated EV manufacturing operation in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu. The business plans to spend Rs 4000 crore over the course of five years in this project.

The US electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla is anticipated to declare its arrival in the Indian market as well, perhaps investing $2–3 billion to set up an EV production facility. Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, is scheduled to see Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his two-day visit to India beginning on Sunday. After his discussion with the PM, Musk is anticipated to announce Tesla’s suggested investment.

Regarding the anticipated investment, Tesla is said to have initiated talks with the state governments of Telangana, Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Uttar Pradesh. A few other state governments are also making a strong effort to get Tesla to take them into consideration.

JLR is still reporting strong revenue growth in the interim. According to the company’s announcement last week, continued worldwide demand and increasing manufacturing caused its March quarter sales to grow 11% year over year to 114,038 units. In the fiscal year that concluded on March 31, 2024, JLR sales in India increased by 81% to 4,436 units.
