Suspect in the US Maine mass shooting is discovered dead

According to authorities, the guy who is suspected of murdering eighteen people in Lewiston, Maine, was discovered dead from “an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.”

According to Xinhua news agency, Robert Card, 40, a member of the US Army Reserves, is suspected of opening fire at a restaurant and a bowling alley on Wednesday night, leaving at least 18 people dead and 13 wounded.

According to a representative of the Maine Department of Public Safety, the suspect was discovered dead on Friday night at 7:45 p.m. local time (2345 GMT) close to the Androscoggin River in Lisbon Falls, around 10 miles (16 km) from Lewiston. He seemed to have self-inflicted a gunshot wound.

Card has an arrest warrant for eight counts of murder, according to a statement made by the Maine State Police on Thursday.

Following the suspect’s death, local officials lifted the shelter-in-place order for nearby villages.

The White House said on Thursday that US President Joe Biden had ordered all US flags down to half-staff until Monday in remembrance of the victims and had called with state leaders to express his sympathy after the horrific murders.

The atrocity was the worst shooting in the US this year and the 565th in 2023, according to the nonprofit research organization Gun Violence Archive.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that Maine, a northern state with a population of around 1.3 million, has one of the lowest rates of murder in the nation.
