IIMC is designated as a Deemed-to-be University by the Education Ministry

The Indian Institute of Mass Communication, IIMC, has been officially proclaimed a deemed university under a distinctive category by the Ministry of Education, acting upon the endorsement of the University Grants Commission (UGC). This declaration encompasses not only IIMC in New Delhi but also its five regional campuses situated in Jammu (Jammu & Kashmir), Amravati (Maharashtra), Aizawl (Mizoram), Kottayam (Kerala), and Dhenkanal (Odisha). Empowered with the deemed-to-be university status, IIMC is now empowered to confer degrees, including the prestigious doctoral degrees.

“In accordance with the counsel of the UGC, the Ministry of Education, exercising its authority vested under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956, hereby affirms the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC), New Delhi, alongside its five regional campuses in Jammu (J-K), Amravati (Maharashtra), Aizwal (Mizoram), Kottayam (Kerala), and Dhenkanal (Odisha) as an Institution deemed to be a University under a distinctive category,” articulates the official statement.

The institute has expressed its heartfelt appreciation to the Ministry of Education for the conferred status of a deemed-to-be university. “Our sincere gratitude to the Ministry of Education for bestowing the esteemed deemed-to-be university status upon IIMC New Delhi and its five regional centers. IIMC remains dedicated to delivering excellence in fostering education, training, and research in the realm of mass communication,” conveyed IIMC through its microblogging platform.

Established on the 17th of August, 1965, under the aegis of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting of the Government of India, IIMC also stands as the premier training academy for officers of the Indian Information Service (IIS). The notion of deemed university status to IIMC is not a recent development, as this initiative gained approval from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting back in 2016.
