“Knife,” Salman Rushdie’s autobiography about being stabbed, will be out on April 16

Salman Rushdie’s memoir on the knife assault he endured in 2022 is now scheduled to enter bookstores on April 16, publisher Penguin Random House India said on Thursday. The author believes that creativity is the best response to violence.

“Knife: Meditations After an Attempted Murder” is a book written by Rushdie that describes in “unforgettable details” the horrific events that occurred on August 12, 2022, at the Chautauqua Institution. During that incident, a guy with a knife approached him while he was wearing a black mask.

Rushdie lost his right eye’s vision due to the assault.

In the book, the 76-year-old recounted his path toward physical rehabilitation and healing after the assault.

“This was a necessary book for me to write: a way to take charge of what happened, and to answer violence with art,” remarked Rushdie.

The book, which has 256 pages, is “a deeply moving reminder of literature’s capacity to make sense of the unthinkable, an intimate and life-affirming meditation on life, loss, love, art-and finding the strength to stand up again” .

After Iran’s Grand Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini issued a fatwa in 1989 accusing Rushdie of blasphemy in his work, Rushdie was for a while in hiding.

The author of “The Satanic Verses” lived alone and under constant guard. However, he had been free to go about without many limitations for years prior to the stabbing at the Chautauqua Institution.

Salman Rushdie’s Knife is a significant work on our world and the role that literature plays in it. Penguin Random House India publisher Milee Ashwarya said in a statement that “it is a must read.”

Among his other works are “The Moor’s Last Sigh,” “Shame,” and “Midnight’s Children,” which won the Booker Prize.

In addition, Rushdie is a well-known supporter of free speech and a past president of PEN America. In addition, he wrote a narrative on his years in hiding after the Fatwa, titled “Joseph Anton” in the third person.

“Knife” is a novel that will burn in your eyes and serve as a reminder of how words can make the unimaginable make sense.

We are thrilled to publish it and inspired by Salman’s resolve to share his tale and get back to what he loves doing.” The CEO of Penguin Random House, Nihar Malaviya, said.
