Women’s Equality Day has a long history that dates back to 1920. On August 26, 1920, the US Constitution’s 19th Amendment, which forbids the federal and state governments from restricting the right to vote on the basis of gender, was officially ratified. The inaugural Women’s Equality Day was celebrated in 1971, during the campaign for the Equal Rights Amendment and women’s equality. On August 26, 1970, the National Organization for Women (NOW) asked women to take part in a statewide “strike for equality,” which is when Women’s Equality Day was first observed.
