AAP announces candidates for the mayoral poll

In the impending MCD mayoral elections, the Aam Aadmi Party on Thursday declared its candidates: Mahesh Khichi, a councillor from Dev Nagar ward, for mayor, and Ravinder Bhardwaj, a councillor from Aman Vihar, for deputy mayor.

On Thursday, the two contenders submitted their nominations. The MCD mayor will be chosen from the reserved category for this year.

Since the party’s founding in 2012, Khichi has been connected to it, having participated in Arvind Kejriwal’s 2011 India against Corruption (IAC) campaign. Khichi, a Moti Lal Nehru College BCom graduate of Delhi University, has held positions as booth, ward, and Karol Bagh RWA president in the past. In Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh, he has also conducted party campaigns.

As a result of his contributions to the party, he was put up as the Dev Nagar ward candidate. He prevailed, and throughout the last 12 months, he has actively collaborated with the locals. Gopal Rai, the convener of the Delhi AAP, said during a news conference that “the party has decided to make him the mayoral candidate for the upcoming term” in light of everything.

Rvinder Bhardwaj was a member of the IAC fight against corruption and has also been connected to the AAP from its founding.

He is a re-elected councillor from Kirari assembly constituency’s Aman Vihar ward number 41. He had been a local in-charge for the AAP. He has held the positions of mandal president and booth president.

In addition, Bhardwaj served on the working committee, appointment committee, and standing committee of the North MCD from 2019 to 2021. He completed his post-graduate studies at IGNOU after earning his political science degree from Delhi University.

Five one-year terms are available for the position of mayor, rotating between the open and reserved categories in the second, third, and fourth years; the first two are reserved for women. The MCD mayor is chosen this year from within the reserved group of council members.

As for the BJP, their candidate for mayor is Kishan Lal, a councillor from Shakarpur’s Ward No. 62. In the 250-member MCD house, the AAP now has 124 council members compared to the opposition BJP’s 104.
