Update on Monsoon Rain: Himachal Pradesh, Delhi, and Punjab Prepare for more rain today; at least 22 people have died

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast that Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, and Punjab would see heavy to very heavy rainfall on Monday. This means that heavy rain will continue to pummel North India. At least 22 people have died in Himachal and surrounding regions due to a severe rainfall spell across northwest India caused by the interplay of a western disturbance and monsoonal winds.

The most rainfall in the previous 40 years was recorded in the nation’s capital. On Sunday, chaotic images of walls crumbling, roads collapsing, and waterlogging appeared, stopping all activity. Arvind Kejriwal, the chief minister of Delhi, will convene a meeting on Monday to discuss the Yamuna’s growing water level in light of the forecast for further precipitation in the following days.

Here are the latest weather reports for North India:
1. The Western Himalayan Region, Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh, Delhi, and Rajasthan may have scattered heavy to very heavy downpours on Monday, according to the IMD. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is anticipated from July 10 to 12, with isolated instances of very severe rainfall possible in Uttar Pradesh.

2. Since 4 p.m. yesterday, Delhi’s Pragati Maidan Tunnel has been blocked due to severe rain and resultant waterlogging. Due to severe rain, Himachal Pradesh Railways has canceled all trains between Shimla and Kalka for today and tomorrow.

3. The weather office in Himachal Pradesh has issued a warning, predicting that in the majority of places, moderate to heavy rainfall with thunderstorms is very likely to continue in the districts of Bilaspur, Solan, Shimla, Sirmaur, Una, Hamirpur, Mandi, and Kullu, and very heavy rainfall is likely to occur in isolated locations. In the remaining areas, there may be a few spots with light to moderate rainfall.

4. On Sunday, significant landslides and flash floods occurred in certain areas of Himachal Pradesh. In the last 36 hours, 13 flash floods and 14 large landslides were recorded. Six individuals were trapped in the Beas River close to Nagwain village in the Mandi district as a result of the river’s rising water level as a result of the state’s constant rains, and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team carried out a late-night rescue operation to free them.

5. After a more than 13-hour effort, the NDRF team in Jabalpur was able to rescue four individuals who were stuck in the Narmada River close to Gopalpur Village. On Sunday afternoon, four people from Garhapurva in Jabalpur town went to the fishing location.

6. Due to severe flooding brought on by Monday’s torrential rains, all schools in Punjab’s Ludhiana district will stay closed. Ministers, deputy commissioners, senior superintendents of police, and other relevant authorities have been ordered by the Punjab government to visit the affected districts and provide the necessary help. In order to address the crisis, the Chandigarh government has established three emergency control centers and 18 fast reaction teams. In response to concerns of heavy rains, schools have also been ordered closed on Monday in Delhi, Gurugram, and Uttar Pradesh.

7. As water levels surged in all the main rivers, including the Ganga, in the Himalayan state of Uttarakhand on Sunday due to heavy rainfall and landslides, officials issued a red warning. Pushkar Singh Dhami, the state’s chief minister, encouraged residents to refrain from needless travel and asked visitors who were coming as pilgrims to only schedule their trips after receiving the most recent weather reports.

8. On Sunday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah talked with the chief executives of Punjab and Himachal Pradesh and requested reports on the damage caused by the severe rains. He pledged to provide both nations any assistance necessary. Shah also discussed rainfall reports with the lieutenants governors of Delhi and Jammu & Kashmir earlier in the day.
