AAP: Ten alderman were “illegally” nominated by LG due to MCD issues

New Delhi: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) asserted on Friday that lieutenant governor VK Saxena’s “unilateral and illegal” nomination of ten aldermen to the civic body “without the aid and advice of the elected dispensation” was the sole reason the Standing Committee of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), which had the authority to approve funding for all large-scale projects, could not be constituted.

The party claimed that this was brought before the Delhi High Court by the government’s attorney in a case about the lack of textbooks and uniforms for children attending MCD schools.

The party said that over the previous thirty years, the elected government had nominated names for the corporation’s alderman, and LG was obligated to follow its guidance and assistance. This basically indicates that those nominated to serve as company aldermen are chosen and appointed by the elected government. But this time, LG made the unilateral appointment. The party released a statement saying, “The matter was challenged before the Supreme Court and the judgment is awaited.”

AAP went on to say that the corporation’s many initiatives had come to a standstill due to the lack of a standing committee. The Standing Committee’s approval is necessary for any project valued at Rs 5 crore or higher.

The party said that the attorney begged the court to provide the House with all of the Standing Committee’s authority so that no work would be delayed, citing a resolution that was approved and passed in MCD. Despite the resolution being approved in January 2023, the commissioner has not submitted any such plan to the MCD House.

“The government attorney has requested a week’s notice and instructions from the commissioner to forward the proposal to provide textbooks and school uniforms to students.” We’ll see to it that the House passes it, allowing us to go on with all the unfinished business, such as the contract for school supplies, books, stationery, and uniforms.
