CBI has two cases against former SPs and three Chandigarh police officers

Three Chandigarh Police employees—two Inspectors and a Sub-Inspector—as well as a former SP have been detained by the local branch of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in relation to two First Information Reports (FIRs).

Their city homes were searched today by the investigative agency.

According to sources, the investigative agency has charged Inspector Ram Rattan, who is now serving as the SHO of the Sector 31 police station, SI Satyawan, Inspector Pavnesh Kumar, who works in the communication branch, and former SP Roshan Lal.

The sources said that during the accused’s detention at the Industrial Area police station, Anil Malhotra, the executive director of Nexus Malls, was given preference in the investigations.

The sources went on to say that the CBI’s action resulted from an investigation that was started after the Punjab Governor and UT Administrator, Banwarilal Purohit, referred allegations of corruption and misconduct against Kuldeep Singh Chahal, the then-Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), to the investigating agency.

Ten months before his three-year inter-cadre deputation was set to expire, in December 2022, Chahal was summarily returned to his original cadre in Punjab. In January 2023, the CBI initiated a first investigation and subsequently registered a preliminary inquiry (PE) against Chahal.
