Chandigarh voting booths will be distinct in design

The UT Election Department has chosen to set up at least 78 polling places with distinctive characteristics for the June 1 polling here in an effort to spice up the voting process.

Vinay Pratap Singh, Deputy Commissioner-cum-District Electoral Officer, said that up to 58 model polling stations will be set up around the city in areas with high voter turnout in order to guarantee maximum voting participation. People would not have to wait in lengthy lines to cast their ballots once these booths were introduced. Voters would be able to wait in these waiting rooms at the booths rather than in a line. He said, “These rooms will have a variety of amenities like drinking water, air-coolers, wheelchairs for voters with disabilities, etc.”

In a separate action, the government will construct five voting places that will be run exclusively by individuals with disabilities. These specifically marked booths would be situated in regions where low voter participation has historically occurred. In an effort to empower them, five booths will be devotedly run by persons with disabilities. In addition to the presiding officer, each booth will have four or five staff members, he said.

There are around 4,800 disabled voters in the city, and he said that extra accommodations would be made at every polling place to make sure they don’t have any problems. There will be ramps, wheelchair accessibility, and designated lines for each voting place.

In addition, the department intends to set up five polling places overseen by youthful staff members under the age of thirty in order to promote youth involvement and first-time voter turnout.

In addition, he said that the department would set up five “pink booths,” which would be run entirely by female staff and intended to provide female voters a safe and cozy space.
