The Maharashtra government said on Wednesday that a one-member commission will investigate the rape and murder of an 18-year-old girl inside her room at a government hostel in south Mumbai.

A day after the horrific crime case came to light, Higher and Technical Education Minister Chandrakant Patil made the declaration.

The lady, a polytechnic student, was reportedly raped and killed early on Tuesday at the Savitribai Phule Working Women’s Hostel in the Charni Road neighborhood.

According to investigators, the accused afterwards killed himself by leaping in front of a train.

The one-member committee will be led by Dr. Nipun Vinayak, the state project director. He will be assisted by the state director of higher education and the divisional joint director from the higher education division. The government directive mandated that the inquiry report be submitted as soon as possible.
