Dual kidney transplants are performed at AIIMS

This is the first instance of a twin kidney transplant performed successfully by medical professionals at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi. A 51-year-old lady who was reliant on constant dialysis had the surgery.

The 78-year-old donor was pronounced brain dead after being brought to the AIIMS trauma center on December 19 owing to a head injury. In cooperation with the Organ Retrieval Banking Organization, the hospital’s Department of Surgical Disciplines and Department of Nephrology performed the procedure.

“We had to place two kidneys in a confined space, which is usually not the case as typically only one kidney is transplanted,” said Dr. Asuri Krishna, an extra professor at AIIMS. Following surgery, the patient’s recuperation went well, and both kidneys are now in good working order.

The recipient now has four kidneys total—two of her own. The procedure took place in December of last year, and the reason for the postponement of the information’s release was to make sure the patient recovered fully.

Mansukh Mandaviya, the Union Health Minister, has congratulated the medical team on their accomplishment.
