“EC is a puppet, helpless, not to give Modi a notice.”

On Friday, Rajya Sabha member Kapil Sibal claimed that the Election Commission’s decision to ask the BJP to respond to Prime Minister Narendra Modi rather than the opposition over the latter’s accusation that he delivered a divisive speech in Rajasthan demonstrated the party’s status as a “helpless puppet.”

The EC sent a notice to BJP president J P Nadda, requesting his response to complaints filed by the Congress, CPI, CPI (ML), and civil society organizations regarding remarks made by Modi on April 21 in Banswara. This is the first time the EC has taken cognizance of a model code violation complaint against a prime minister.

These criticisms had alluded to Modi’s claims that the opposition party wouldn’t even spare women’s “mangalsutra” and that the Congress wanted to transfer the nation’s riches to Muslims. Sibal said, “Election Commission (EC): No ‘lal ankh’ to Modi,” in a post on X, seeking the BJP’s reaction to Modi’s statements that are overtly communal. demonstrates that the EC is a powerless puppet that risks embarrassment by failing to notify Modi and being unaware of its own MCC.
