Elections in Madhya Pradesh: BJP Announces List Of 57 Candidates, Nominates Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan From Home Turf Budhni

Shivraj Singh Chouhan, the chief minister, is running from his home district of Budhni in the forthcoming state assembly elections, according to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which released its list of 57 candidates on Monday.

Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Telangana, and Mizoram elections schedules were released by the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Monday. Madhya Pradesh, which is governed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), will vote on November 17, and the four other election-bound states will also tally the results on December 3.

Along with Chouhan, the list also includes BJP contender for the Datia seat and Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Narottam Mishra. Mishra has often made headlines in recent years due to his extreme views on Hindutva.

The BJP has so far announced the names of 136 candidates for the assembly elections on 230 seats with the most recent list.

The names of these 57 candidates were endorsed by the BJP Central Election Committee, which included JP Nadda, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and other top leaders, during its meeting on October 1, according to PTI.

Shivraj has served as the state’s chief minister for 16 of the BJP’s 18 years in power in Madhya Pradesh. He originally assumed the position of chief minister in 2005 and retained it till the Congress removed him from office in 2018, appointing Kamal Nath as his replacement. Chouhan, however, regained control of the state in 2020 when Jyotiraditya Scindia, who is now a minister in the Union, overthrew the Congress administration.

While the BJP is working to unseat the Congress party from office in Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, it is also working to keep power in Madhya Pradesh, where it has been paying close attention amid rumors of a possible shift of power. Shivraj recently made a comment that alluded to it when he said, “Aisa bhaiya nahi milega. To bohot yaad aayunga, jab chala jayunga. (There isn’t another brother like me. When I’m gone, you’ll think well of me. Since the mother’s brother is your “mama” (maternal uncle), Shivraj has earned the nicknames “bhaiya” to ladies and “mama” to children as a result of his women-centered programs throughout the years.

The BJP has run three Union ministers and three MPs in the elections so far, which has been regarded as an effort to combat anti-incumbency and a resurgent Congress unit in the state. Narendra Singh Tomar, the Union Minister of Agriculture, Prahlad Singh Patel, the Minister of State for Food Processing and Jal Shakti, and Faggan Singh Kulaste, the Minister of State for Steel and Rural Development, are among the ministers.
