Everything You Should Know About INS Imphal, the Navy’s Recently Commissioned Warship

INS Imphal, a warship built in India, was officially launched into the Indian Navy today at a ceremony held in Mumbai. In attendance were Navy Chief Admiral R Hari Kumar, Chief Minister of Maharashtra Eknath Shinde, and Defense Minister Rajnath Singh.

Ten Things About the New Navy Warship
The Indian Navy has built and constructed four destroyers of the Visakhapatnam class; the third of them is called INS Imphal. Destroyers of the Visakhapatnam class are an improvement on the P-15A Kolkata class destroyers and are referred to as P-15 Bravo or P-15B.
The first battleship to bear a northeastern city’s name is INS Imphal, which received clearance in 2019 from Ram Nath Kovind, the Indian president at the time.
Named after a northeastern city, INS Imphal holds the unique distinction of being the most sophisticated stealth-guided missile destroyer. With its “state-of-the-art” guns and sensors, it can reach a top speed of 56 km/h.
There were many sea trials conducted by the battleship prior to INS Imphal’s induction. The BrahMos cruise missile, which can be fired from land, sea, air, or even submarines, is the fastest cruise missile in the world.
It is possible for INS Imphal to conduct anti-submarine warfare missions. It contains advanced surveillance radar that feeds target data to the gunnery weapon systems, along with rocket and torpedo launchers made in the country.
With a 75% indigenous content, the destroyer is built in India and equipped with 76mm super fast gun mount, torpedo tube launchers, and the BrahMos medium-range surface-to-surface missile. Indian companies create the military systems.
Imphal’s construction and sea testing took the least amount of time ever for a destroyer. The keel of INS Imphal was laid in 2017, and testing commenced in 2019. The battleship of this size was ready to be delivered six months after the sea testing started in April 2023.
According to the Centre, naming the destroyer after Manipur’s capital city of Imphal is a suitable homage to the state’s role in the Indian independence movement, the Anglo-Manipur War of 1891, or Netaji Subash Chandra Bose’s raising of the INA flag for the first time in Moirang in 1944.
The other destroyers of the Visakhapatnam class, which symbolize various states and regions, are INS Visakhapatnam, INS Mormugao, Imphal, and Surat. In terms of operational importance and capability, destroyers are ranked just behind aircraft carriers.
Project 15, the Delhi-class destroyer, was the first of India’s domestic guided missile destroyer program to be launched in the 1990s. Project 15A, the Kolkata-class destroyer, and Project 15B are now under development.
