Extreme heatwave in West Bengal and Odisha; IMD issues a red alert

NEW DELHI: Due to the extreme heatwave conditions in this region, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) stated on Saturday that it has issued a red warning for Odisha and Gangetic West Bengal.

A red warning has been issued due to the extreme heatwave conditions that have been present in Gangetic West Bengal for many days, according to Soma Sen Roy, senior scientist at IMD.

“Severe heatwave conditions are also being faced in Odisha, especially in North Odisha, although not like in West Bengal but severe enough for many days and hence a red alert has been issued for this part too,” she said.

She went on to say that eastern and peninsular India are now experiencing very high and above-normal temperatures.

East India, the South Peninsula of India, and the northern regions of Kerala are also experiencing heatwave conditions. Bihar and Jharkhand in East India are under an Orange warning from IMD, while Eastern Uttar Pradesh and northern Kerala are under a Yellow notice.
Regarding the abrupt shift in the country’s weather in the north, the scientists from IMD said that there were several thunderstorms in some areas, including Delhi.

While there was a lot of thunderstorm activity yesterday, the North Indian Plains are not expected to have as much precipitation today. An orange signal has been issued in the Western Himalayan area, primarily because it is expected that thunderstorms and heavy rainfall would persist across Jammu & Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh. There is a yellow warning in effect for Uttarakhand, Haryana, Punjab, etc. We anticipate increased thunderstorm activity starting the day after tomorrow, April 29, 2024, particularly across North-West India,” she said.

Soma Sen Roy went on to say that hot conditions will persist in the eastern area of India and that there would be little impact from disturbances in the west.
