Following the death of a student at Jadavpur University, two further students who have been accused of involvement in ragging and suicide have been arrested

Two further students have been detained by the police in Kolkata on suspicion of involvement in the hazing incident that led to the death of a student at Jadavpur University earlier this week. The victim was 18 years old.

Two additional pupils were taken into custody by the police a day following the first arrest, which was made of a former student of the educational institution. Deepshekhar Dutta and Manotosh Ghosh are the names of these two students. Deepshekhar Dutta is a student in the Economics department, while Manotosh Ghosh is a student in the Sociology department. Both of these students are in their second year at the university.

Sourabh Chowdhury, a previous student of the institution who had been unlawfully remaining in the hostel after he finished his MSc in Mathematics in 2022, was the one who was caught before them. Chowdhury is a former student of the university.

The authorities are reportedly looking into whether or not the 18-year-old victim was subjected to sexual harassment as part of their investigation into the death of the 18-year-old that was allegedly caused by intensive ragging.

The other students at the institution have made postings on social media saying that students often encounter harassment in the form of vulgar comments and are compelled to do sexual activities as a part of their ragging, and that the police have apparently taken notice of these incidents. According to the posts, the police have taken cognizance of these incidents.

What exactly took place in the primary dorm of Jadavpur University?
On August 9 at around 11:45 p.m., Swapnadip Kundu, who was a first-year student at Jadavpur University studying Bengali (Honours), is said to have fallen from the balcony of the main dorm building of the university.

Kundu was taken to the hospital immediately, however he passed away from his injuries there at around 4:30 in the morning.

According to the reports, the dead man’s uncle, Arup Kundu, told NDTV that the deceased man had called his mother and asked her to take him back from where he was, and that an hour later, his parents received a call informing them that the deceased man had fallen from the balcony. Kundu allegedly claimed the following: “Swapnadip spoke to his mother on Wednesday evening and told her that he was not feeling well and that he was scared.” When his mother asked him what had occurred, he told her, “You please come as soon as you can.” I have a lot of information to share with you.’ When she attempted to contact him again, her calls were not returned. After another hour or two, his parents received a phone call informing them that their son had fallen and needed medical attention in Kolkata.

Additionally, Kundu said, “The body was completely covered, but the doctor showed me a piece of paper which indicated injury marks on his body.” How could anything like this happen if it wasn’t a case of ragging?

Swarnadip’s father, Ramprasad Kundu, has filed a police case in which he makes the allegation that his son’s death was caused by ragging at the hands of some of the other hostel residents.

Arpan Majhi, a classmate of Swarnadip’s who was quoted in a PTI story, has spoken out against the practice of ragging that is carried out by some of the older students at the institution.
