Himanta Sarma’s ‘Supriya Sule’ jab in response to Sharad Pawar’s criticism of Prime Minister Modi

Himanta Biswa Sarma, the chief minister of Assam, poked fun at Sharad Pawar on Wednesday amid the continuing political brawl over his remarks about the Israel-Hamas conflict by stating it seems the NCP leader would send his daughter Supriya Sule to Gaza to fight for the terrorist organization.

When questioned about Sharad Pawar’s perspective on the recent conflict, Sarma said the news agency ANI, “I think Sharad Pawar will send Supriya (Sule) madam to Gaza to fight for Hamas.”

The NCP leader criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for expressing support for Israel, saying it’s regrettable that the PM ignored the true problem since prior Indian prime leaders have “stood firmly with Palestine”. This sparked a political uproar.

“Palestine owns the whole region, and Israel has encroached on it. Everything there, including the buildings and land, belonged to Palestine until Israel seized control of it. Israel is an alien, and Palestine originally owned the territory, Pawar had said in a speech to party members in Mumbai.

In response to Pawar’s comments, Union minister Piyush Goyal stressed the need of denouncing terrorism on a global scale. Pawar has held important roles in the administration throughout crucial security situations, Goyal said.

When a top politician, like Sharad Pawar, makes absurd claims about how India feels about a terror incident in Israel, it is quite upsetting. Anywhere in the globe, the threat of terrorism must be denounced in all of its manifestations. It is unfortunate that someone who has served as India’s defense minister and chief minister several times has such a careless attitude toward matters connected to terrorism, he wrote on X.

“Pawar ji was a member of the same government that wept over the Batla House incident and slept off when terrorist strikes took place in India. This foul mentality must change. I’m hoping that Pawar Ji would now put the country first,” he said.

Devendra Fadnavis, the deputy chief minister of Maharashtra, also denounced the NCP leader’s comments and said that the nation has never altered its stance on this matter and has “always strongly opposed terrorism.”

“India’s stance on the Israel-Palestine conflict has never altered. But at the same time, India has constantly condemned terrorism and has always been vehemently opposed to it against everyone and everything, he said in a post on ‘X’.

On October 7, Modi said that India’s thoughts and prayers were with the helpless victims and their families as Israel was being pounded by rocket attacks launched by Hamas terrorists.

On Thursday, the conflict between Israel and the terrorists of Hamas began its thirteenth day. In preparation for a potential ground assault to apprehend Hamas members, Tel Aviv has deployed its military around the Gaza border. Over 4,000 people have died in the conflict since it started on October 7, including over 1,400 Israelis and 2,750 Palestinians.
