In Panipat, a 15-year-old’s marriage was stopped

A police squad and the district Women’s Protection and Child Marriage Prohibition Officer stopped a 15-year-old girl from being married in the city on Thursday.

The officer, Rajni Gupta, said that she and a few other police officers arrived to Hari Singh Chowk, the site of the wedding ceremony, after getting information from the police control room and a non-governmental organization (NGO).

Investigations revealed that the bride was just fifteen years old. Uttar Pradesh was the source of the baraat. According to the girl’s mother, she was from Saharanpur (UP), and her husband had been living apart from her for the last seven years due to alcoholism. During lockdown, she claimed that her younger daughter had eloped with a guy. She wanted to marry her daughter in order to prevent things from happening again.

According to Gupta, the youngster was moved to a daycare facility on the Child Welfare Committee’s orders to ensure her safety.
