In the last nine years, more than 24 crore Indians have emerged from multidimensional poverty: NITI Aayog

About 24.82 crore individuals in India have fled multidimensional poverty during the previous nine years, according to an NITI Aayog research.

Beyond financial considerations, the Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI), a widely accepted metric, was used to evaluate poverty. Based on the Alkire and Foster (AF) technique, the worldwide methodology of MPI uses a widely accepted criterion to assess acute poverty to determine who is poor.

According to the research, multidimensional poverty in India has significantly decreased, falling from 29.17 percent in 2013–14 to 11.28 percent in 2022–2023—a decrease of 17.89 percentage points. With 5.94 crore individuals fleeing multidimensional poverty in the state of Uttar Pradesh, the state had the biggest decrease in the number of impoverished.

“Multidimensional poverty in India has significantly decreased, falling from 29.17 percent in 2013–14 to 11.28 percent in 2022–2023—a decrease of 17.89 percentage points. With 5.94 crore individuals escaping multidimensional poverty over the previous nine years, Uttar Pradesh had the biggest reduction in the number of impoverished, followed by Bihar with 3.77 crore, Madhya Pradesh with 2.30 crore, and Rajasthan with 1.87 crore, the survey said.

According to the research, between 2015–16 and 2019–21, the poverty headcount ratio declined at a rate of 10.66 percent annually using the exponential technique, which was much quicker than the rate of fall of 7.69 percent between 2005–06 and 2015–16. Over the course of the research, there was a noticeable improvement in each of the 12 MPI measures. Due to data constraints for these particular years, projected estimates were used to compare the poverty levels in 2013–14 to the present scenario (2022–23).

According to the research, India is expected to accomplish the goal of halving multidimensional poverty well in advance of 2030, which is the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG).
