JNU discusses the “escalation” of political violence against women in Bengal

Late on Saturday night, the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) branch of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) held a panel debate over the purported rise in political violence against women in West Bengal.

At the event headlined “The Reality of Political Violence Against Women in West Bengal,” notable politicians such as MP and West Bengal BJP president Sukanta Majumdar and Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly Suvendu Adhikari were present.

Majumdar emphasized how dire things were in Sandeshkhali, a hamlet in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas area. “It’s no less than hell, Sandeshkhali, where incredibly brutal atrocities are taking place against women,” he said. He related the story of a mother who, fearing for her safety, had to move her daughter-in-law to Madhya Pradesh.

Adhikari, echoing Majumdar, denounced the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and communist thugs for continuing to abuse women. “Democracy is being murdered in Mamata’s state every day, and secular people across the country are silent on the issue,” he said.

Speaking anonymously, one lady described the abuse she endured from TMC officials and their allies, including threats and harassment. The speakers demanded that the predicament of women in West Bengal be addressed immediately. “The Sandeshkhali incident is not an isolated event,” said Adhikari. The whole state is still under the oppressive rule of the TMC thugs.
