Kerala opposition leader accuses Delhi Lt Governor of breaking the Model Code and files a complaint with the EC

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The leader of the opposition, VD Satheesan, addressed the Central Election Commission on the day after Delhi Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena met state church leaders, requesting that the latter be held accountable for his attempts “to garner votes for the BJP.” According to Satheesan, the objective was to seduce them into endorsing the BJP.

On the eve of the Lok Sabha polls in Kerala, VD Satheesan accused Delhi Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena of “blatantly violating the model code of conduct by visiting various church heads in Kerala to lure them into taking a stance in favor of the BJP in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections” in a letter to the ECI.

It has been reported that Lt. Governor V K Saxena of Delhi, who is now visiting Kerala for two days, has asked to meet with the leaders of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, the Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church, the Syro Malabar Church, and other organizations. Some religious leaders reportedly refused to meet with the lieutenant governor.

As you are aware, the governor is prohibited from engaging in any political action and serves as the state’s constitutional leader. But before the Lok Sabha elections, the Delhi Lieutenant Governor paid visits to many church leaders in Kerala in an attempt to win support for the BJP. This, Satheesan added, is a stain on democracy and its basic principles. The top Congressman pleaded with the Election Commission to move quickly to punish the Lieutenant Governor for breaking the model code of behavior.
