Land is sold by a former Odisha Congress MLA to raise money for her daughter’s election campaign

A former Congress MLA in Odisha has sold a portion of her family property to raise money for her daughter, who is also a politician, to run in the Assembly election. The daughter is a doctor, and the mother is reportedly unable to pay the growing poll fees.

Debendra Sharma, who served as the Kendrapara district’s Aul Assembly constituency’s representative from 2014 to 2019, reportedly sold his five decimal homestead plots in his hometown village.

“My daughter Dr. Debasmita Sharma, 28, is running for office in the seat where my father and I were previously elected as MLAs. She is fighting the system, money, and force.” Given that competing candidates are significantly investing in their campaigns, we are finding it difficult to cover our expenditures,” Sharma said.

When it comes to financial resources, our party is hiding. The Income Tax Department has been given full rein by the Modi-led administration to freeze the finances of our party. My daughter has received virtually little support from the party for her candidacy. I have thus sold a homestead land in the hamlet due to pressing circumstances,” he said.

He stated his daughter was a doctor in a hospital operated by the government.

“Like her grandpa and myself, she left her job to get into the public eye and is running for office. She is getting excellent feedback from voters as she is running for office. He said, “I am very optimistic that people would put their faith in her.

The BJD’s Pratap Keshari Deb—a cabinet member in the Naveen Patnaik administration—and the BJP’s Krushna Chandra Panda square off against Debasmita, a doctor turned politician.

Despite several tries, the Congress candidate Debasmita could not be reached since she was preoccupied with election campaigning.
