Last hour, the Congress manifesto eliminated the CAA

The Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) has been the target of intense criticism by the Congress on the Modi government’s implementation. However, the legislation seems to have lost favor in the party’s most recent election platform.

Although “repealing and amending of CAA” was included in the first copy of the manifesto, sources stated that the party’s senior leadership chose to remove it just before the document was made public. Instead, if the INDIA alliance were to win power, the party pledged in its platform to remove all anti-people policies enacted by the NDA.

The harsh CAA would be changed and abolished, according to the manifesto’s first draft. Nevertheless, they abruptly changed their minds and stopped mentioning CAA and listing any rules, according to a leader with knowledge of the situation.

When questioned about eliminating the CAA, a manifesto committee member informed this newspaper that the party has pledged to undo many anti-people legislation enacted by the BJP and NDA without appropriate parliamentary review and discussion, under the heading “reversing the damage.”

A minimum daily income, equal pay for women, and free healthcare are three of Congress’s main manifesto pledges.
But in this area, the party discussed examining and changing legislation pertaining to labor, agriculture, criminal justice, the environment and forests, and the protection of digital data. Removing CAA is not mentioned in this section.

Congressman Shashi Tharoor said that the opposition will challenge the legislation in the Supreme Court, labeling it illegal, after the Union government’s notification of the CAA on January 10. In addition, Tharoor said that if the INDIA coalition wins, the Congress platform will include a vow to remove the CAA. The Congress and the governing CPI(M) in Kerala are at odds over the party’s omission of any mention of the CAA in its platform.

Pinarayi Vijayan, the chief minister of Kerala, has been accusing the Congress of being afraid to discuss the controversial Act, which is why it has been silent on the matter. According to Vijayan, Congress purposefully avoided the CAA.
