Lok Sabha elections: EC requests a statement from Rahul Gandhi and PM Modi about MCC infractions

NEW DELHI: On Thursday, the Election Commission of India declared that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Rahul Gandhi had violated the Model Code of Conduct by allegedly inciting hate and disseminating misleading information.

The poll body is looking for responses by 11 a.m. on April 29.
Each party has accused the other of stoking animosity and dividing people on the basis of caste, religion, community, or language.

By invoking Section 77 of the Representation of the People Act, the EC has held party presidents accountable for containing prominent campaigners.

“Primary accountability for the behavior of its candidates, especially high-profile campaigns, will need to fall on political parties.

High-ranking individuals’ campaign remarks have more severe repercussions, according to a statement released by the Election Commission.

Alleging that Rahul Gandhi, the head of the Congress, has been making false statements about the nation’s growing poverty rate, the BJP asked the Election Commission to take “strict action” against him on Monday.

In an attempt to sabotage the electoral atmosphere, the BJP filed a protest with the poll commission, accusing Gandhi of continuing to divide the nation along linguistic and geographic lines.

In an official complaint, Congress has petitioned the Election Board and asked that PM Modi be taken to task.

“The only available remedy compatible with the principle of zero tolerance towards allegations of corrupt practices, is the disqualification of the candidates who try to create a divide between different classes of the citizens of India regardless of the stature or position of that candidate,” the memorandum from the Congress stated.
