M S Dhoni filed a contempt action against an ex-IPS officer; the Supreme Court extends the Madras High Court’s punishment decision

In response to a contempt suit brought up by former Indian cricketer Mahinder Singh Dhoni, the Madras High Court had sentenced former IPS officer G Sampath Kumar to 15 days of simple jail. However, the Supreme Court has recently prolonged the stay of this verdict.

“The Interim order shall continue till further orders,” said a two-judge panel of the highest court, which also included Justice Ujjal Bhuyan. The issue was scheduled for further hearing on May 3. The panel was chaired by Justice A S Oka.

Kumar, the former IPS officer, was very relieved by the highest court’s ruling.

Additionally, the Supreme Court had already postponed Kumar’s 15-day sentence till today.

It should be recalled that in December of last year, the Madras High Court sentenced Kumar to 15 days of simple jail in response to a contempt suit filed by former Indian cricket player Dhoni. To allow him to file an appeal with a higher court, a division bench of Justices S S Sundar and Sunder Mohan postponed the punishment for 30 days.

Subsequently, Kumar had applied to the Apex Court via his attorney B Balaji, contesting the Madras High Court’s decision to sentence him to 15 days in jail for contempt of court, which had been brought by former Indian cricket team captain, Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

In 2022, Dhoni filed a contempt plea against the officer, accusing him of disparaging the Supreme Court in his speech.

Dhoni has filed a legally mandated procedure against Kumar in an attempt to take legal action against him.

In his contempt plea, Dhoni alleged that Kumar had claimed that the Supreme Court had strayed from upholding the rule of law and had shelved the Justice Mudgal Committee’s deposition, keeping it under wraps for reasons he could not understand.
