Model Code of Conduct Violation: SC Protects Umar Ansari from Arrest

In a criminal complaint filed against him during the 2022 assembly elections for alleged violations of the model code of conduct, Umar Ansari, the son of gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari, was given protection from arrest by the Supreme Court on Thursday. The Uttar Pradesh government received notice from a bench consisting of Justices Hrishikesh Roy and P K Mishra on the case contesting the Allahabad High Court ruling.

Senior attorney Kapil Sibal argued on behalf of Ansari that regular bail has been given to the primary accused in this case. On December 19 of last year, the Allahabad High Court denied Ansari’s request for anticipatory release, stating that the offense was proven based on the case’s facts and circumstances.

In Mau district, on March 4, 2022, a formal complaint was filed at Kotwali police station against Abbas Ansari, the SBSP candidate running for the Mau Sadar seat, Umar Ansari, and 150 unidentified individuals.

According to the FIR, Abbas, Umar, and organizer Mansoor Ahmad Ansari called for settling a score with the Mau administration at a public meeting on March 3, 2022, at Pahadpura Ground. There has been a breach of the election code of conduct.
