Pohra becomes a mosquito sanctuary due to garbage mounds

Nagpur: The once-pure Pohra River, which rises from Sonegaon Lake, is now posing a health risk to those living in the city’s Karve Nagar, Kannamwar Nagar, Manisha Nagar, and Beltarodi neighborhoods due to carelessly thrown trash obstructing the waterway.
Pohra was formerly included in the beautiful Bhor Sanctuary. Unfortunately, because of the widespread dumping of trash, it has now turned into a cesspool.

The canal under a railway bridge was found to be overflowing with trash, which left the water stagnant and allowed mosquitoes to thrive unrestrained. The residents were shocked to see this.
During a recent morning walk, a group of villagers noticed the mess under the railway bridge near Manish Nagar bypass, which brought the seriousness of the matter to light. One of them said, “The waterway is choked and overflowing with refuse; the stench and mosquito infestation are getting worse every day.”

When TOI reached out to the locals, it was evident that they were upset with the state of affairs. A Karve Nagar resident named Milind Pendharkar said, “The water isn’t flowing because of piled up garbage.” The location has thus turned into a mosquito breeding ground, and the stink is making matters worse.

“I think the clogging might be because of the ongoing construction of the 4th railway track nearby,” said Sachin Kolarka, a different local. However, it still doesn’t excuse the accumulation of trash in this area. It seems that several hotels in the vicinity are utilizing the Pohra River as a rubbish disposal site, as shown by the many plastic water bottles and thermocol floating in the water.
Kolarka also made the observation that antisocial people use the area adjacent for illicit activities after dark. “People party along the river, as evidenced by the food wrappers and empty alcohol bottles we found during regular morning walks,” he said.

While elections are being held, the citizens have not formally filed any complaints with the local government. They will, however, shortly file a formal complaint with the police, the collector, and NMC representatives.
According to a senior Nagpur Municipal Corporation official who spoke with TOI, “The garbage must have piled up because the nearby railway track expansion stopped the water flow.” We will undoubtedly begin the Pohra River cleanup within the next three to four days.
